The Direct Selling profession is amazing.
It provides unlimited opportunities for you to achieve – and exceed – your dreams. In addition to the income potential, the differences that direct selling can make in your personal life are simply amazing. It is quite literally life changing. It will open you up to greatness and skills you never knew you had. |
All too often it also creates a rather confusing paradox: your significant other does not share your enthusiasm and passion for your business. Here you are with this incredible opportunity for both income and personal satisfaction. And the one who you look to as your biggest cheerleader is being your biggest obstacle.
They may simply be indifferent to your passion. Or, they may be blatantly negative. Too many women give up on their businesses to maintain ‘peace’ at home.
Would it empower you to know that it IS possible to build the fulfilling life and business you desire, regardless of your significant other’s perspective? Would you like to equip yourself for happiness at home and at work? What can you do when the one with whom you share your life journey is putting down you, your dreams and your vision?
If there is extreme emotion or anger coming your way, there may be an opportunity to consult an appropriate professional. You simply can’t have a rational conversation with one who is in an emotional space (especially a negative one).
Achieving success requires that you keep your eye on your prize; that you are crystal clear on what you want. If your partner is unhappy with your business, seeking some clarity as to why, may assist you. If trying to communicate about your business right now is a source of the wrong energy, simply stop bringing it up. For now …
Regardless of the basis of their concerns, there is something that is impacting your other half and influencing your interaction. It may be something as simple as concerns around money or time away.
Know this – it is NOT you.
Coaching Success
As coaching teaches us, effective communication means success and it occurs when you meet them where they are at. If they can’t see level 1, trying to talk about level 10 simply won’t register.
The main area of interest or concern for most people is a first person one. What will I get out of it? And, how will it affect me? Present your message in terms of what you know is important to them, i.e. it may not just be about the money. It may help him have more time for activities that are near and dear to his heart. You don’t have to sell your spouse on the entire process – just what is pertinent at this moment in time.
See the similarity with presenting your opportunity to a prospect? It’s not just describing the opportunity, it’s presenting your opportunity as the solution to THEIR problem.
Just because your spouse is your spouse doesn’t mean he will automatically comprehend what you mean and will be as excited as you. As you start earning the trips or cars, and bringing in the large monthly checks, things may change. If they are slow to see the benefits, stay focused on your game, keep taking the right consistent actions to achieve what you desire.
One of the secrets to support is that your partner doesn’t have to believe in the direct selling profession, or your business. They simply have to believe in YOU.
Choose the information that you share with them. If there is already negativity at home, would you want to share any information that is less than optimal? If you need to vent, choose an outlet that supports you, yet doesn’t detract from the mission at home.
At all times, know that it is not about you. Just as you won’t take it personally when someone declines your business or a show, don’t take anything personally at home about your business. Just as any other area of the business realm, your partner’s enthusiasm and support represents an opportunity.
And, you have a choice – you choose whether you allow it to hinder you or you can to choose to be the empowered direct seller you are….
