Burnout Prevention – Home Business Owners & Self Care



Most direct sellers work out of their homes and have families in addition to their busy work schedules.

Many still maintain full-time jobs while building their direct selling businesses.

They are the traditional care giver at home, which means that between their work and their home “work,” they are working the equivalent of two full time jobs.

These are the circumstances producing recipes for burnout.

I recently spoke on the topic of burnout at a local networking meeting and it was so great to hear and learn from other direct sellers how they manage burnout in their lives.

Lets look at self-care.

You simply cannot do anything from an empty well.

Take care of yourself first.

While it sounds so obvious and simple, we seldom do.

We are told on airplanes to put our own oxygen masks on first before we mask our children.  We cannot help anyone if we are unconscious.

The same is true in our day-to-day lives.  Isn’t it ironic that most people fail miserably at self-care when ill?  Most of us visit the doctor only after our fever is raging and we can no longer take the pain.

By implementing simple daily habits that support our own well-being, we are better able to show up and do the work that matters.

When we care for ourselves, we are better able to care for others.

It’s that simple.

Yes, it will feel hard and foreign at first; you might even experience guilt, but stick with it!

You’ll find yourself feeling better in a very short time and able to take on more than you could before.

Start with something small, a bubble bath or simply waking up 30 minutes before anyone else to stretch and do some deep breathing.  You’ll notice a difference after only a few short weeks and remember you’re worth it.

Burnout Prevention

So the questions I have for you are about your burnout prevention measures.

  • How do you take care of yourself?  If you don’t have an answer, then my hope is that you start to looker deeper at yourself.  Think about:
  • What gets in your way of putting yourself first?
  • What excuses do you make for not taking care of yourself?
  • What are you willing to do about it?

When you started in direct sales, you had a bigger vision and a dream of why you started your direct selling business.

  • Was it to be able to spend more time with your kids?
  • Did you want to be able to work from home?
  • Make your own schedule?
  • Enjoy greater financial independence?

Keep your dreams in front of you as you move into a routine that supports your overall well-being.  Let that be the motivation when nothing else works.
